The Open Government Partnership (OGP) was launched on September 20, 2011 by 8 founding governments (Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom, and United States). It is a global multilateral initiative aimed at securing concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. Sixty three countries have joined the initiative. In Africa seven countries are members: South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia, Ghana, Malawi and Sierra Leone.
Since 2012 AFIC has prioritized OGP as an important platform on which to drive ATI agenda in Africa. Its work has mainly been around facilitating knowledge exchange through video conferences, webinars, research and expert support missions. In addition, AFIC coordinates with Governments, civil society organisations and the Support Unit in contributing to the organisation of regional and international OGP outreach meetings and Summits.
Through this work access to information campaigns have been strengthened with a Sierra Leone delivering on its promise to adopt ATI law while Tanzania, Kenya and Ghana have come up with own commitments to adopt ATI laws. AFIC is engaging with key stakeholders civil society and development partners on the development and implementation of a continental OGP strategy.
