Last week, Africa Freedom of Information Centre hosted the first General Meeting of African Freedom of Expression Exchange (AFEX), a network of African freedom of expression organisations, which are members of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX). AFEX mission is to increase the effectiveness of its members in addressing freedom of expression challenges in Africa. Such challenges include laws and policies, traditions, customs, absence of capacity arising from ignorance, poverty and lack of access to technology; and security.

The meeting was held in Johannesburg the 30th January 2014. The members discussed institutional issues to strengthen AFEX’s work and reflected on the freedom of expression in Africa. The members condemned the detention of journalists and called on African governments to release the journalists in their custody and guarantee freedom of expression.AFEX Resolution
