Statement of AFIC at the 66th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR
Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) and its membership of 40 civil society organizations in 21 African countries appreciate the opportunity to address the 66th ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Commission).
We would like to reiterate our resolve to support the mandate of the African Commission and the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa to advance freedom of expression and access to information on the continent.
AFIC commends the efforts of the African Commission in closely following the situation of human rights during the COVID-19 crisis in Africa. In a statement issued by the African Commission’s Working Group on the Rights of Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa, State Parties were called upon to make every effort to ensure access to information on the measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including messages’ translation into local languages and the use of accessible means of communication.
